The reconstruction project of the "Ashnak" 220/110/10 kV substation was implemented with loan funds provided by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). The contractor for the project was Xian Electric Engineering Co. Ltd. The objective of the project was to enhance the reliability and security of Armenia’s power transmission system.
The "Ashnak" 220/110/10 kV substation was originally commissioned in 1987. It is located about 70 km from Yerevan and occupies an area of 5.1 hectares.
The physically and morally outdated equipment of the substation was replaced with state-of-the-art technologies. As part of the reconstruction, the 220 kV and 110 kV equipment was modernized, two 220/110/10 kV autotransformers were replaced, and the 10/10 kV line voltage regulators were overhauled. The 10 kV indoor switchgear building was completely reconstructed, and the equipment was upgraded. New control and security buildings were constructed. The relay protection and automation systems were entirely replaced and digitized. A new type of SCADA system was commissioned.
The "Ashnak" 220/110/10 kV substation ensures the connection between the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant and the "Gyumri 2" and "Vanadzor 2" substations
